And How It Has Enhanced My Coaching Practice

Exploring Life Coaching almost twenty years ago, I participated in group phone conversations between coaches and coaches-in-training. As I listened, a spirit of discovery awakened in me and I heard myself saying, “This is what I want to do!” I knew intuitively that this was my next direction. I learned the ropes of the program, asking powerful questions and supporting clients interpreting and understanding their next steps to more meaningful lives.
Using this time-tested framework, I eventually began including a more intuitive approach. Most of us know intuition as that gut reaction, the aha moment, the inner nudge, a soul-knowing. It’s a gift we all share. I started relying on my own inner wisdom and that of my various coaching partners, making our conversations a more co-creative process.
I once worked with a professional businessman who was battling cancer but bravely persevering in curing it. His challenge was family relationships. After we successfully concluded a series of coaching sessions, he would occasionally call me with a one-time question. Christmastime was approaching and his grown son was asking to come visit and bring his family. Maintaining a peaceful home atmosphere was still critical to this gentleman’s healing so he was having trouble and feeling guilty about saying no to his son and grandchildren. Listening to his story, I had to depend on intuitive guidance to reassure him that his health and well-being came first. He breathed a sigh of relief and immediately came up with the solution that his son and family could stay in a hotel and come to his home for short visits. He already knew the answer to his own question and needed support and encouragement to make his decision.
Working with others to activate their own intuition often guides us both to amazing solutions to otherwise challenging problems. I also worked with an enthusiastic senior who was being asked to leave her job of many years and relocate. This presented a series of complicated and difficult decisions, including limited finances, resolving a sense of grief and resentment about having to leave, lack of familiarity with new locations, and endless lists of pros and cons. Being a lifelong introvert, she initially wanted my opinion about anything and everything. My role as a coach is to activate insight, discernment and wise decision-making rather than offering advice or judgment. After many coaching conversations, she took action, making her own choices and solving her own problems, resulting in a successful move to a new location where she remains happy and at peace.
May your own journey of self-discovery be enhanced by getting to know your intuitive voice, trusting in that inner wisdom, and allowing your heart to guide your footsteps. If I can offer you support or encouragement, please be in touch.
